Communication is the foundation for any successful relationship, however, many supervisors are not sure how to effectively do this. One way to make having conversations easier is to ask insightful questions that stimulate thoughtful responses. In the business world, this technique is called “coaching conversations.”
Coaching is a key business strategy and an effective tool in helping employees increase performance and engagement by asking meaningful questions that get the employee to think deeply for answers. By asking questions during conversations, an employer is helping others to learn by creating the opportunity to self discover solutions rather than telling the individual what to do.
There is a Chinese proverb that says, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Telling people what to do is helping them for a day; asking thoughtful questions to help others think about what they can do is teaching them for life.
